Tracing is a key ingredient for solving complex issues quickly. The Linux kernel tracing infrastructure has been tremendously useful in understanding the complex issues that are happening in the kernel. But now there's a new black-box that needs to be opened. That is how guest VMs act on top of the host hypervisor they are running on. With cloud deployments and encapsulation, VMs are as important as they ever were. They are still heavily used even with the push towards containers. This talk will show how to use trace-cmd (the front end interface to the Linux kernel ftrace infrastructure) and KernelShark to trace and visualize the connection between guest and host. It will also explain how the events between the two are synchronize such that the time lines match. If you are responsible for the performance or stability of a virtual machine on a Linux hypervisor, then this is the talk for you!
