This talk presents a real-world case of what it takes to build a thriving Open Source community. While working for PayPal, in a keynote at OSCON 2015, Ms. Cooper first announced formation of the InnerSource Commons project. At that point after 16 years working in the Open Source movement and helping many organisations develop and execute effective Open Source strategies, Ms. Cooper saw InnerSource as the best way for PayPal to learn to collaborate internally before they attempted to expand on their public Open Source strategy. As her team began to build an internal InnerSource practice, she realised that PayPal couldn't be the only company that needed to fix their old-fashioned internal engineering culture in order to understand Open Source. With the support of the CTO office and several Engineering VPs, the InnerSource Commons project was launched. The plan was to run InnerSource Commons as an Open Source community, meaning that PayPal would publicly share all artifacts created for its own InnerSource program to help other companies on the same journey. Today the InnerSource Commons Foundation is a thriving US 501(c)3 with thousands of collaborators working in an Open Source way to teach InnerSource. Learn 10 lessons from building InnerSource Commons using Open Source.
